Acupuncture and Chinese medicine seek to address the root cause of disease

Though acupuncture and Chinese medicine draw from 3000 years of passed-down knowledge, and functional medicine stems from modern, science-based Western medicine, they share some uncanny fundamentals. Like functional medicine, acupuncture and Chinese medicine seek to address the root cause of disease. Rather than just treating symptoms, both piece together clues to form a differential diagnosis that explains where the symptoms are coming from to create lasting relief and true health. Acupuncture, like functional medicine, can benefit virtually any health condition and can prevent health problems before they arise.

I practiced acupuncture and Chinese medicine for a decade before diving headfirst into functional medicine. Since Chinese medicine uses a systems approach, my years as an acupuncturist trained me to think from a systems biology perspective and gave me a head start in my functional medicine training, because fundamentally, the thought process is very similar. As a doctor of Chinese medicine, I was taught to treat the individual person, not the disease, and personalize each and every treatment. My training in acupuncture and Chinese medicine helped me become an astute clinician, able to treat based on the clinical picture. When I added the ability to glean biochemical and genetic clues from advanced laboratory interpretation, I took my ability to help patients to the next level. My passion and respect for Chinese medicine remain strong, and I provide acupuncture treatments on a limited basis.
